Eva's Field Fly-away

Jan
17

On 17 January the EAA Chapter 1502 were treated to a marvellous time and a very fine breakfast at Eva's Field, close to Hilton College. Hosted by Cameron MacKenzie at James and Sue Bentley's beautiful hilltop airfield and home, this meeting of aviation enthusiasts was attended by pilots, wives and sweethearts and plenty of children. The next generation of pilots will come from exciting days like this one.

Gordon's SA Kit Planes Explorer Project

Dec
16

Gordon Pickles is a surgeon by day, and on weekends can be found propelling himself around hills and valleys on a mountain bike, or working on his Explorer project in the hangar at Grass Roots.
He had the assistance of a merry bunch of guys so he did a trial fitment of the wings to ensure that the butt ribs lined up perfectly. The photo shows him proudly taking a photo of his creation. He is meticulous in his work and it is lovely and inspiring to watch the progress on the aeroplane.

EAA Chapter 1502 East Coast Open Day and Fly-in at Grass Roots Airfield.

Dec
16

The Open Day at Grass Roots has been an institution for almost 30 years.

Graham and Sally McDonald built the airfield and they set up 16 December as a good time to have a get-together with aeroplanes and people. It has always been a fly-in - however, the weather often conspires against such activities in KZN at this time of the year, bringing misty cold days - or scorching windy days - or any combination of the above.

Alan's Piper PA17 Vagabond ZS-VLN

Nov
02

Alan Lorimer is busy restoring a Piper PA17 Vagabond, which was the love of our dear departed Bob Illsley. Bob had begun the restoration before his passing, and he sold the unfinished project to Alan. ZS-VLN was registered in the LS1 category and will continue with that registration into the new Light Sport category when complete. This aeroplane began life as a PA15, and still has the data-plate attached to one of the fuselage frames. It was later modified with dual controls, two doors and bungee suspension and brought up towards PA17 status.

What our members are up to - Chapter 1502 East Coast

Chris Hicks is coordinating a programme that should lead to the restoration-to-flight of one of South Africa's oldest homebuilt aircraft still extant.
This is a Taylor Monoplane, built by Ian Parker back in the late 60s. Many old-timers may remember this aircraft from the EAA Conventions held in Pietermaritzburg back in the 1970s, and then later when it adopted pseudo RAF camouflage and roundels.

Gatsby Photo Shoot

Nov

A while ago, Steve McCurrach - pilot and expert aerial photographer - phoned me and asked if I would loan my aeroplane for a photo-shoot. Questions from me elicited the answer that the shoot might include a young lady or two and that my aeroplane would act as a backdrop to a photography school class run by a well-known Johannesburg-based photographer and tutor

- Gerald Maddams, Chapter 1502 South Coast

Back in December 2000 I collected the remnants of an aeroplane from Centenary, 120 km north of Harare in Zimbabwe. That began an incredible life journey during which I met many, many wonderful people and continually learned new things and developed new skills.
