Here's the challenge - microlights (MPL, < 450kg) vs. light aircraft (PPL, > 450kg) (both categories have fixed wing...) Let's see which category has the most aircraft flying in!
Hello Fellow Aviators.
This year's EAA Convention held at Wonderboom was attended by exactly four trikes. In the past the organizers have welcomed Microlights but have among other things shoved us off to the other side of the airfield far from the action. This undoubtedly, is one of the reasons for the poor attendance.
I have been speaking with Terry Hertz vice chairman of EAA about how to encourage more microlight pilots to attend. With all the Microlights around I think we can get 200 pilots to fly in at next year's convention.
Project 200.
This is the plan. Firstly we will park our Microlights with all the other planes. I think 200 trikes parked together will be quite a sight.
Between now and next year we will be organizing at least four Microlight specific breakfast fly-ins at Wonderboom. A few more closer to the convention. Any other aircraft will be most welcome.
Landing and approach fees will be waived. The ATCs will join us for breakfast
This will give us the opportunity to fly in controlled airspace and actually speak the ATCs face to face. To start with we will fly in groups with one pilot speaking for his group or club. There after when you have heard and seen how easy it is you can speak yourself. Get over the fear of ATCs. They are not scary and it makes you a better pilot.
What I need now from you pilots old and bold is a commitment to be there or be square. EAA is opening their arms and hearts to us, after all we all love to fly, let's embrace this opportunity.
Safe flying
