This is a reminder about the EAA 322 Sun ‘n Fun fly-in to Tempe which takes place from 23 – 25 October 2009. Jack Onderstall, Johan Naude and the members of the Bloemfontein Flying Club are once again convening the EAA 322 Sun ‘n Fun with the full blessing of EAA Chapter 322. I know that these good people have invested a lot of time, effort and money into making the weekend an even better get together than last year for all of us who simply enjoy flying, aeroplanes and each others’ company. Register on arrival for details of other events/goodies, aircraft judging etc. and get tickets for the Spit Braai and Prize Giving Party @ R80/person.
The weekend does not involve any air show and hence we will be able to have fun, flying and showing our aeroplanes. Use Tempe’s new dedicated frequency of 131.3 Mhz and follow standard unmanned airfield approach and joining procedures from 5 nm out. SMS the word FATP to 35010 and you will get a real-time weather report – this is such a treat! Remain below the Bloemfontein TMA unless you’re on a flight plan and in contact with ATC. Avgas at Tempe is R8.20/litre and landing fees a once off R10 for the weekend.
Commentary will be provided by Brian Emmenis and entertainment at the Saturday evening Spitbraai /Prize Giving will be by well known comedian/singer Dix Vorster. Suzuki is a major sponsor of the fly-in and their magnificent rig and Arab tent will be the centre of the ground based activities. The event will also feature a re-union of Neil Bowden’s Oshkosh expedition participants. There will be all manner of NTCA and other aviation vendors, food stalls, maybe even a beer tent.
If you have ever dreamt of building your own aircraft, then this is where you get to speak to others who have been down this road. The owners of many Experimental Aircraft will be there to pass on their skills and knowledge to you.
The Sun ‘n Fun Fly-In will be complemented by a Piper fly-in as well as being the official Comanche Society fly-in. Mike Blyth and James Pitman’s around- the- world Sling and the GP4 that Chalkie flew to shatter the Henshaw Challenge will be present and most probably a jet or two. The facility to have your aircraft judged by knowledgeable folk is a great way to get an informed opinion on your aircraft’s condition. There are fine trophies and other prizes on offer.
Planned activities include a Fun Rally organised by Mary de Klerk and Frank Eckard from SAPFA. Taking part is not only fun, but will help hone your navigating and flying skills without any embarrassment to yourself. Pre-event entering via maryd@expandingbranding.co.za
General displays and activities
There will be various static displays of aircraft, vendors, aircraft memorabilia stalls, instruments, food stalls, new and second hand/ready-to-fly assembled aircraft. All companies involved with the production of NTCA have been invited to show their products. The day’s activities will consist of unlimited and non-stop flying (within the constraints of the AIC 19.1) aircraft judging, demo flights, flipping, parachute jumping and forums on subjects such as the Garmin 296.
The event is open to Bloemfontein Flying Club paid-up members and all EAA paid-up members. The public are welcome to attend and may buy “temporary club membership” which is valid for one day only, available at R20 per person.
